On the other hand, Canon 5D Mark IV is an all-rounder camera that can take sharp stills and has dedicated dual pixel AF sensor inside. Panasonic GH5s, meanwhile, gently surpassing 5D Mark IV in other section, such as in burst speed, ISO range, shutter speed etc.

Image quality

From the table (above), it is clear the bigger Full Frame sensor of 5D Mark IV must give you the cutting edge sharp images since bigger sensor size allows enormous amount of light onto the sensor… and we know more the light sharp will be the images. Canon 5D Mark IV features 30.4 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS Sensor, whereas Panasonic GH5s implements 10.2MP High Sensitivity MOS sensor. Also 5D Mark IV will produce large print of the subjects.

AF system

Both the two cameras have different AF system. Canon 5D Mark IV has Dual Pixel AF sensor, whereas Panasonic GH5s has DFD AF technology inside. Each has the same role in their cameras. However, 5D Mark IV has fast and intelligent Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Yes! Dual Pixel CMOS AF enables continuous automatic AF and AF tracking to enhance the overall camera’s AF operation.  As a result, tuck-sharp still images and smooth, accurate focus transitions in movies will be achieved, unobtrusively. As we explain further, the Canon 5D Mark IV uses dedicated Phase AF sensor, whereas GH5s is working with contrast detect sensor only, but DFD technology (Depth from Defocus) that works together with contrast AF technology that comprehensively calculates the distance of the subjects and analyze as per form, size and even motion of the subjects. But GH5s features exclusive 225 AF points, allowing the users to chose focus areas as per the specific composition required and with the help of joystick located on the thumb position, they can control it easily. Meanwhile, Canon 5D Mark IV has only 61 AF points  and out of them up to 41 cross-type points tracking area that enhances the AF system.

Additional AF features included in GH5s are:  Post Focus function (If focus is not exactly as the user intended when the shutter is pressed) enables users to select the specific focus point even after shooting — effectively helps the users during macro shooting. And Focus Stacking function enables users to take multiple images of the same frame with different focus points then you can combine them into one image with the defocus as you like.

ISO

Both of these two cameras have noise reduction Algorithm. Panasonic GH5s gets rank in this section since at first it has high sensitivity of 204800 and then its Standout feature called Dual Native ISO, providing low range (400) and high range (2,500) ISO environments. On the other hand, 5D Mark IV also manages to offer expandable ISO 102400 that is quite enough but GH5s is different!

Shutter speed

Panasonic GH5s has incredible faster shutter speed of 1/16000 seconds allows you to capture fast actions of the subjects, such as fast moving train or speed running deer etc. Other benefit of faster shutter speed is that it allows you to use the wide aperture while shooting at bright lighting conditions. Unfortunately, you can use the faster shutter speed upto 1/8000 sec only with Canon 5D Mark IV.

Burst rate

If you are using GH5s then probably there is no difficulty in capturing the action that happens so quickly since GH5s offers continuous shooting speed of 12fps that allows you to capture 12 different numbers of shots at a time through which you can pick the best one. On the other hand, Canon 5D Mark IV allows the faster shutter speed of 7fps only.

Video

Due to Panasonic GH5s’ insane 4K capability (4096 x 2160p @ 60fps), we can call it one of the best video mirrorless cameras in the arena. And the best part is that you have no time limit while recording 4K. Actually, Panasonic GH5s is a must have camera for cinematographers since the camera also offers 1080p@60fps along with 4K.

Canon 5D Mark IV can also record 4K, but 3480 x 2160p @30fps. Panasonic Gh5s is sniffing the victory in video section.

Shots

Canon 5D Mark IV offers to take around 900 shots at a time, whereas GH5s allows 440 shots only at a time.

Verdict

Panasonic GH5s is highly recommended camera for the Cinematographers since the GH5s offers superfine video along with sublime lowlight images. Canon 5D Mark IV is semi professional DSLR that acquires stunning specifications in the pack. for still shooters Canon 5D Mark IV is wonderful choice.
