It will really be a difficult task for the buyers who have to pick any one camera from these two, Nikon D3400 and Nikon D5500. Because, if you take a look to the cameras specifications table you can see that both of these two Nikon cameras implement the same 24 Mp resolution and same APS-C sensor that clearly means that the users of both the two cameras will impress the photographers by producing stunning images with details of the subjects.

AF points– From top to bottom of the table, the only major difference that is taking our attention is AF points. You can see that Nikon D3400 uses only 11-AF points, whereas Nikon D5500 uses 39 AF points, but the best part is that both the two are using Hybrid AF system (Contrast as well as phase), letting the users to track the subjects instantly and accurately. However, the advantage of more number of AF points is that the camera will able to quickly lock on to fastest moving subjects to produce beautifully focused images. In other words the users of Nikon D5500 is gaining the advantage of more number of AF points.

Display– And then come to the display section of the cameras- Here again Nikon D5500 is making its way that integrates an incredibly sharp 3.2-inch Vari-angle LCD monitor with touch operation making the camera a nice device for both stills and HD video. On the other hand the D3400 integrates 3″ 921k-dot LCD for the operation. But Nikon D3400 will let you to take 1200 different shots at a single time charge while with Nikon D5500 one can take only 480 shots of different subjects.
After all:  the ISO range, continuous shooting drive, shutter speed and more are very similar to each other, even both the cameras offer you to record full HD 1080p/60fps.
Verdict-  No doubt, Both Nikon D3400 as well as Nikon D5500 are truly beginner friendly cameras, but Nikon D5500 is having a little more advance than D3400 and to buy Nikon D5500, you have to pay a fwe more bucks than D3400. Now decision is yours!
