Canon SL2/Canon 200D vs Canon 800D

Image quality

Not a big difference one can see in the quality of images produced by these two cameras. Though 200D is compact but using the same size APS-C sensor (23 x 15mm), plus both have the same number of effective pixels. Moreover, even the image processing engine inside both systems has Digic 7. So we do expect almost similar quality of images in any kind of shooting situation.

AF system

Look at the table carefully, both Canon 200D as well as 800D shares a few similar specifications. One of those is Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor. Yes, a very innovative and Canon’s own proprietary, the DPAF really boasts the AF system to offer you pin point focus of the subjects (claimed to deliver fastest AF speed @0.03s), in live view mode. DPAF increases the efficiency of a camera to determine the distance of the target subject and focuses accordingly. Hence users can get precise and fast focusing results from both cameras, even if the subjects move in motion.

Though both have contrast + Phase detect AF system for fast and accurate focusing of the subjects. But Canon 800D drifts SL2 away in terms of AF points. One side, where SL2 features the modest 9 AF points only, whereas 800Dcomes with intelligent 45 AF points and all are Cross-type AF system that promises even more precise focusing compared to the 9 AF points of SL2.

Continuous shooting drive

Canon 800D offers one FPS more than that of Canon SL2 or 200D (800D – 6fps, SL2 – 5fps). So Canon 800D is somewhere more efficient in capturing the actions fast moving subjects.

Canon SL2 is however, a lightweight and compact camera but implements truly impressive specs and its comparison with Canon 800D doesn’t give a big clue that it is out of part of the game it keeps scoring. You can see both offer Full HD video, have similar size rear screen, shutter speed etc.

Canon SL2 lets you take around 650 shots at a time, whereas Canon 800D allows 600 shots only. Canon SL2 offers advantage of taking 50 more shots compared to 800D.

Price factor

Being a compact and lightweight DSLR its price of 200D is comparatively lesser than Canon 800D. But however, there is somewhere where Canon SL2 goes down in this comparison, such as 9 and 45 AF points difference, continuous drive and a few more.

The one who loves photography while travelling, Canon 200D is the right pick that could offer you best image quality, outstanding focusing of the subjects… And above all, it is lightweight and compact that lets you carry it wherever you photography desires take you . Otherwise, Canon 800D is submissive solution that gives everything a beginner needs.
