Image quality

As you can see that Canon 5D Mark IV features 30.4 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS Sensor, whereas Panasonic GH5 implements 20.3MP Live MOS sensor. It is sure that the bigger Full Frame sensor of 5D Mark IV must give you the cutting edge sharp images since bigger sensor size allows enormous amount of light onto the sensor… and we know more the light sharp will be the images. On the other side, GH5 carries M4/3 sensors, which is comparatively smaller in size than the Full frame. Hence, the images produced by Panasonic GH5 will not be as sharper as 5D Mark IV. However, both the two cameras eliminate low-pass filter that advantages in getting the detailed portion of the subjects. Other benefits you can earn from Canon 5D Mark IV is that it has bigger pixels area than GH5, which effectively helps in getting better dynamic range and also offers better lowlight performance.

Image stabilization

Sometime the uncontrolled and unnecessary cameras shakes arise during video recording and shooting as well, but the most difficulties we face with these camera shakes while shooting at lowlight areas. However, the camera with image stabilization mechanism is the remedy matter of these unwanted cameras shakes. You can see Panasonic is very serious with this matter that is why they implement the 5-axis Dual I.S. (Image Stabilizer), Combining an O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer, 2-axis) and B.I.S. (Body Image Stabilizer, 5-axis), which effectively suppresses blurring issue in advanced ways for both photo and video recording, including 4K video. On the other hand, Canon 5D Mark IV doesn’t implement any image stabilization mechanism, but it could give your great result when mounted on I.S lenses.

AF system

We should give more rating to the AF system carried by 5D Mark IV all due to its smooth, fast and intelligent Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Yes! Dual Pixel CMOS AF enables continuous automatic AF and AF tracking to enhance the overall camera’s AF operation.  As a result, tuck-sharp still images and smooth, accurate focus transitions in movies will be achieved, unobtrusively. Now, the other difference we notice is that 5D Mark IV uses dedicated Phase AF sensor, whereas GH5 is working with contrast detect sensor only, which can give you instant focusing responses, but somewhere accuracy will be missed. Excitingly, Panasonic GH5 comes with a newly improved Depth from Defocus that works together with contrast AF technology that comprehensively calculates the distance of the subjects and analyze as per form, size and even motion of the subjects. On the other hand, the 5D Mark IV has a dedicated 61-point High Density Reticular AF II system that features up to 41 cross-type points tracking area that enhances the AF system with consistent focus tracking to capture the action of the subjects accurately and work in co-ordination with Dual pixel CMOS sensor. Similarly, GH5 is also based on same working principle since it uses a dedicated DFD hardware that work in synchronization with the contrast detect sensor featuring  distinctive 225 AF points, allowing the users to chose focus areas as per the specific composition required and with the help of joystick located on the thumb position, they can control it easily.

Moving further, one big advantage we can take from GH5 is that it offers Post Focus function (If focus is not exactly as the user intended when the shutter is pressed) enables users to select the specific focus point even after shooting — effectively helps the users during macro shooting.

Additional AF feature in GH5 is a Focus Stacking function enables users to take multiple images of the same frame with different focus points then you can combine them into one image with the defocus as you like.

ISO

Well, both the two cameras feature noise reduction algorithm that help deliver high-level light sensitivity along with its high resolution, but the ISO 100–32000 (expandable to 50–102400) of 5D Mark IV is incredibly well for low-light photography. On the other hand, GH5 offers the expandable ISO range of 25600, which might not be well-suited for lowlight photography.

Continuous shooting speed

Panasonic GH5 will keep you up with the action, which is backed up by faster shutter, AF and superb image processing engine, ensuring stunning instantaneous response and performance at up to 12 fps, even while shooting at 20 MP resolution (Full-resolution). On the other side, the maximum continuous shooting speed of 5D Mark IV is 7 fps only (mayn’t be so effective).

Video

In the beginning of this article, we mentioned that Panasonic GH5 is incredible cinema camera (why?) because it offers you 3840 x 2160p @60fps with no time limit, which is one huge advantage for the cinematographers. Plus, it also offers 4096 x 2160p at 24 fps. But Canon offers 4096 x 2160p at 30fps only.

Shots– Canon 5D Mark IV offers to take around 900 shots at a time, whereas GH5 allows 410 shots only at a time.

Verdict- Based on the features comparisons the biggest advantage of 5D Mark IV we noticed is a 2X sensor size compared to GH5 camera as well as you also get 10 MP more resolution for larger prints. But, the video enthusiasts and the sports shooters we recommend Panasonic GH5.
