Image quality

You can see that Panasonic GH5 as well as Canon 7D Mark II features the high-resolution of 20MP, but Panasonic loses it impression when we talk about the sensor sizes…Yes! GH5 employs 4/3 sensor, which is comparatively smaller than that of APS-C sensor – employed by Canon 7D Mark II. As the theory says bigger the sensor sizes sharp will be images because bigger sensor sizes allows more light that allows the users to get tuck sharp images. But we must give plus point to Panasonic GH5 that doesn’t feature Low pass filter that allows the users to get sharp images (might be lesser sharper than 7D Mark II), but can grab stunning details of the target subjects.

Image stabilization

A much necessary tool that is incorporated inside the camera to stabilize the uncontrolled camera shakes that we usually see while shooting at the night time or when we shoot with using our one hand. Panasonic GH5 adds much more advanced image stabilization that the 5-axis Dual I.S. (Image Stabilizer), Combining an O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer, 2-axis) and B.I.S. (Body Image Stabilizer, 5-axis) that works together to effectively control the appearance of camera shakes. As a result, crisp, blur free and outstanding images will be formed.

Sadly, Canon 7D Mark II body doesn’t have built-in image stabilization, but it can also give you blur free images if it is used with I.S lenses.

AF system

A large number of photographers have kept 7D Mark II as an additional tool in their camera arsenal all due to its exceptionally good and blazing fast Autofocus performance. Yes! 7D Mark II’s exclusive Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DPAF) technology and customizable Movie Servo AF, allowing the camera to provide continuous phase-detection AF during video recording for quick and accurate focus tracking of moving subjects. Canon’s own proprietary, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which they first introduced in Canon 70D is an unprecedented sensor technology in which effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-detection focus measurement simultaneously. As a result, we can see a dramatic AF performance in both video and Live View still imaging modes.

On the other side, Panasonic is working with contrast detect sensor only, but the implementation of innovative DFD (Depth From Focus) technology is boosting the AF performance of the camera, comprehensively. However, 7D Mark II has Phase AF module that features 65 AF point areas only, whereas GH5 offers more numbers of AF areas (225) for even more precise focusing, plus also helps deliver sharp focus for still photos even in extreme low-light conditions.

ISO

By the way, Canon 7D Mark II is getting the preference due to its high sensitivity 51,200 that might give better lowlight performance than GH5 (ISO 25600), as the camera features a standard ISO range of 100–16000 for both still and video. On the other side, GH5 has comparatively lower sensitivity range, but it integrates Noise Reduction mechanism and compared to its previous model it boasts 4x the noise identification accuracy that preserves details even after the noise reduction process.

Continuous shooting speed

Panasonic GH5 has adjustable high-speed continuous burst shooting up to 12 fps enables the easy tracking and capturing of fast moving subjects almost any location of shooting. On the other side, Canon 7D Mark II offers the shooting speed of 10fps only.

Videos

Probably, where GH5 has no fair competitor around! Yes, GH5 allows their users to record 3840 x 2160p at 60fps and also offers 4096 x 2160p at 24fps, which is unassailable at the time. Its extraordinary video capabilities put the great option infront of the cinematographers who are struggling to get breakthrough somewhere. But Canon 7D Mark II is not giving their users the opportunity to record 4K video that is limited to Full HD 1080p only.

Display

Panasonic GH5 adopts a static-type touch control system, the 3.2-inch free-angle rear screen in 3:2 aspect with 1,620K-dot high resolution that lets you to achieve almost 100% field of view and its touchscreen, allowing intuitive menu navigation and settings control etc.

Shots

Canon 7D Mark II allows 670 shots at a time, whereas Panasonic GH5 permits you 410 shots only at a single time charge.

Verdict

Both have completely different cameras with different approaches and field of photography… 7D Mark II is a DSLR with many high qualities L-series lenses available as a choice for the photographers, whereas Gh5 is a mirorless camera that can also use M4/3 sensor, but Photo enthusiasts and professional videographers looking to capture shots in 4K 60p/50p video and 6K PHOTO at the same time… don’t look further than Panasonic GH5. Canon 7D mark II is still recommended for the still shooters.
